Haapavesi is known for its versatile and vibrant culture. The most famous cultural event Haapavesi Folk Music Festival fills the city with music and people every summer.

Music plays a central role in Haapavesi due to its long kantele tradition and also to top teachers. In 1985, Haapavesi was awarded the honorary title of tkantele county at the initiative of the Finnish Kantele Association Kantele. The title received is based not only on Haapavesi’s past, but also on its present, where kantele and playing kantele have held a strong place in the county. In addition to music, the theatre and dance activities are very popular in the city, and there are also many options for museum goers. The Night of the Arts, which takes place in late summer, indulges visitors with its various events. Children’s and Youth Culture Weeks offer a wide range of experiences in Spring.
